About V Starem Melinu

Let me introduce V Starem Melinu, a restaurant that feels like a relaxed local favorite the moment you hear about it, tucked away at Junkovićev put 2 in Zagreb and known for balancing comfort with character. When people ask me how to describe V Starem Melinu, I usually start with the vibe-it’s welcoming, unpretentious, and built around the simple idea that good food tastes even better when the atmosphere is easygoing. Whether you’re stopping by for a casual dine-in experience, grabbing a quick takeaway, or settling into outdoor seating on a pleasant day, the place adapts effortlessly to how you want to enjoy your time. The menu leans into variety without trying too hard, which makes it especially appealing if you like options that fit different moods and schedules. You’ll find everything from small plates perfect for sharing to quick bites that don’t compromise on quality, and there’s a noticeable focus on organic dishes that adds a thoughtful touch to the overall offering. Drinks are just as flexible, with coffee for slow afternoons, beer and wine for laid-back evenings, and a solid selection of alcohol and spirits if you’re in the mood for something stronger. What stands out to me is how naturally vegetarian options are woven into the menu, so everyone at the table feels considered without needing special requests. Late-night food also plays a role here, which makes V Starem Melinu a convenient choice when the evening stretches on longer than planned. For more intimate gatherings, the private dining room offers a quieter setting while keeping the same friendly energy. Overall, V Starem Melinu comes across as the kind of restaurant you recommend without overthinking it, because it fits so easily into everyday plans, spontaneous meetups, and those moments when you just want reliable food in a comfortable Zagreb setting.

Great place to dine in. Great, rustic ambient. Literally placed inside an old water mill. Great terrace. Great food, almost everything is home made or grown. Very pleasant and outgoing owner. Some of the staff can be little bit annoyed or worse, vain. But there are legitimately great guys serving there. Cooks are also great, hence the great food. It could be crowded on peak hours on Saturdays and Sundays but it's definitely worth the wait. Prices are fair and portions are huge. Wine is great, home made liquor is also great. Would definitely visit it once again but with reservation!

I know I've never posted any negative reviews, but this charming little getaway in the midst of the wooded outskirts of Zagreb deserves nothing short of praises. The place is secluded you feel like you've gone hundreds of miles away from the urban area. The staff are all great and the food.... Speechless

This is one of those places people don’t talk about enough. First time here but for sure will revisit the restaurant. You don’t really have the feeling you are in a city, sitting outside in the garden. Food is great, and prices are normal. There wasn’t many tables taken but it is mid summer so I suggest to ring up before coming here. Some parking available in front of the restaurant but not for full capacity. Highly recommended!!

This place is an absolute gem. Delicious authentic old school Croatian food and a very good selection of meat dishes. Very nice atmosphere, both inside and outside by the creek when the weather is nice. The owner and the staff always very welcoming and polite. A must visit.

If you want to eat a delicious meal, all praise and recommendations. The food is very good, the portions are generous. The atmosphere on the terrace is like you are not in Zagreb but in real nature. I highly recommend it. The waiter was a bit clumsy, all the dishes did not come at the same time, which is unacceptable, but I guess it was not his day.

We had a lovely and cozy dinner at V Starem Melinu in Zagreb. The restaurant has a really warm, rustic atmosphere — wooden furniture, checkered tablecloths, and a homely feel that makes you instantly comfortable. It feels a bit like eating in a countryside cottage. The food was hearty and very traditional. We started with a mushroom soup that was simple but flavorful, definitely homemade and comforting. For mains, we tried a fried meat roll with a creamy sauce and a chicken dish with thin-dried flatbread. Both portions were generous, and everything tasted like proper, honest home cooking. The fried roll was crispy on the outside and juicy inside. We also shared a fresh tomato and feta salad, which balanced things out nicely. The presentation isn’t fancy, but that’s part of the charm — it’s straightforward, satisfying, and unpretentious. The service was friendly and relaxed. Our server made us feel welcome and let us take our time enjoying the meal. Prices were fair for the quality and portion sizes. Overall, V Starem Mlinu is a great spot if you’re looking for a cozy place with authentic, home style Croatian food nothing over the top, just good, comforting dishes in a warm atmosphere.
